Course Overview

This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain a FETAC credit in Occupational First Aid at Level 5.

The module is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge, practical skills and understanding required to provide and coordinate first aid in the workplace in compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 and the associated Guide to these Regulations.

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

1. Understand the responsibilities of the occupational first aider

2. Be able to provide treatment for the purpose of preserving life or minimising the consequences of injury until discharge or the arrival of medical assistance

3. Be able to provide treatment in the workplace for an injury which does not require the attention of a medical practitioner or nurse

4. Be capable of coordinating first aid arrangements in the workplace

5. Be familiar with health and safety legislation on first aid provision in the workplace


Assessment: Skills Demonstrations (2) 80% and Examination20%

Preferred entry level and entry requirements: FETAC Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Note: FETAC Protection for Enrolled Learners is not required as this course is less than 3 months in duration.
